Tohorā — A Gift from the Sea

One of the most sacred and unique ingredients within Starseed Activation Oil is Tohorā (whale) oil from Aotearoa (New Zealand).

For Māori people whales hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. They are seen as powerful beings, guardians and guides of the ocean.

The Tohorā oil used in my blend comes from a whale that was stranded and passed over. It is not hunted or killed for its oil.

When a whale strands alive, every effort is made to save it and, where possible, return it to the ocean. Depending on the tikanga (traditional customs and cultural practices) of the local iwi (tribe) or hapū (sub tribe or extended kinship group), karakia (prayers or sacred incantations) and karanga (ceremonial calling) may accompany and honour the whale during this time.

If the whale cannot be saved, karakia and karanga may be offered to honour and farewell the whale as it passes.

After death, the whale continues to be treated with great respect. The customary harvesting of a deceased whale is known as hauhake tohorā (the customary gathering and harvesting of a deceased whale and the gifts it provides).

Before harvesting begins, karakia (prayer) and mihi (words of acknowledgement and respect) may be offered, together with other spiritual and cultural protocols.

During hauhake tohorā, valuable gifts from the whale including bone, teeth and hinu (oil) may be carefully recovered. Karakia may continue throughout the process for guidance, care and protection.

When the work is complete, further karakia and cleansing may formally close the process. Nothing about this is simply taking from the whale. It is a process of acknowledgement, respect and gratitude for what the whale has provided.

THE RECORD KEEPERS

Within my own spiritual understanding, whales are ancient record keepers and frequency holders. I believe they carry codes, knowledge and wisdom through time. Their songs and frequencies travelling throughout the oceans and helping to hold balance between the waters, the land and the energetic field of the Earth.

This is why the Tohorā oil holds such significance within my Starseed Activation Oil. The oil was gifted to me, and only a small amount is used in each blend. I receive and use it with deep respect for the whale from which it came, the people who honored its passing and the ancient connection between whale, ocean and humanity.

Given with respect. Received with gratitude. Used with intention.
